Handmade paper luminaries, glowing vellum windows, and a little vintage carnival magic for Halloween nights.
A tiny light glowing in the dark can change everything.
A paper window becomes a doorway. A few little points of light become the bulbs of an old carnival midway. And suddenly, something made from paper feels like it might have a story of its own.
That’s exactly what happened with my newest Midnight Midway creation.
A Little Idea That Turned Into a Big Top
These started with a simple thought: What if one of my paper rockets became a little circus tent?
I already loved the shape and construction of the rockets I’ve been making, but I kept imagining a shorter, rounder version with a wide Big Top roof. Something that looked as though it belonged somewhere along the Midnight Midway after dark.
So I started experimenting with paper.
The tall rocket shape became a little cylindrical building. The pointed cone became a broad circus-tent roof. And instead of simply decorating the sides, I cut an arched window into each one and backed it with translucent vellum.
Then I put an LED tea light inside.
And that was the moment.
It glowed.
Not just through the window, but through all the tiny openings I had punched into the paper. Suddenly those little holes looked like old-fashioned midway lights twinkling against the night.
The Midnight Midway Big Top Luminaries had arrived.
Meet the Midnight Cat & Carnival Horse
I made two coordinating designs for the set.
One features my mysterious little Midnight Cat, dressed for the occasion in his pointed carnival hat and ruffled collar.
His companion is the Carnival Horse, surrounded by moons, stars and all the slightly mysterious celestial details that have become part of the Midnight Midway world.
The colors are intentionally warm and aged—deep midnight blue, rusty carnival red, cream and touches of gold. I wanted them to feel less like brand-new Halloween decorations and more like something you might have discovered tucked away in an old carnival trunk.
Each one measures approximately 5 inches high and 3 inches in diameter, so they’re small enough to tuck onto a shelf or mantel but large enough for all those little details to show.
Completely Handmade From Paper
One of my favorite things about these is that they really are paper creations from beginning to end.
I print the artwork, cut and form each body, hand-cut the arched window, add the vellum from behind, punch the tiny light openings, shape the Big Top roof and assemble everything by hand.
There are no manufactured lantern forms hiding underneath.
It’s paper, vellum, adhesive—and quite a bit of cutting, shaping and fiddling. 🙂
When the included battery-operated LED tea light goes inside, the vellum softens the light into this wonderful warm glow while the smaller punched openings sparkle around it.
They look pretty sitting unlit during the day.
But after dark?
That’s when the Midnight Midway really comes to life.
Even the Box Became Part of the Fun
Of course, once I finished the lanterns, I couldn’t just put them into an ordinary box. That would never do.
The vintage style pair gets nestled together inside its own presentation box, and I created a special Midnight Midway Big Top Luminaries label featuring the cat and horse.
Opening the box should feel like you’ve received a little package from some mysterious old traveling carnival—not just another Halloween decoration.
For Those Shorter, Magical October Nights
These are the kinds of Halloween decorations I love most.
Not frightening. Not overly bright or plastic.
Just a little strange, nostalgic and magical.
I picture them glowing on a mantel surrounded by old books and pumpkins, tucked onto a shelf with vintage Halloween treasures, or lighting up a little corner of the house on an October evening.
The days are getting shorter now, and maybe that’s part of why I’ve been so drawn to making things that glow.
A tiny light in a paper carnival tent seems just about right.
The Midnight Midway Big Top Luminaries are now available as a handmade set of two in my Etsy shop, complete with the Midnight Cat, Carnival Horse, two LED tea lights and their special presentation box.
The lights are on.
The midway is open.
