Midnight Midway: After Dark — The Enchanted Rose Garden

Sometimes a project starts with a plan. And sometimes you make one little paper rocket, add a rose, then a moon, then an owl—and before you know it, there are eight of them standing on the table looking like they belong to a carnival that only opens after midnight.

That’s pretty much how The Enchanted Rose Garden came to life.

This new collection is part of Midnight Midway: After Dark, a darker, more romantic little corner of my Midnight Midway world. I wanted the old carnival feeling to still be there, but this time I kept reaching for deep reds, midnight blue, antique gold, roses and moonlight.

The result is a set of eight dimensional paper rockets, each with its own personality.

There’s a grinning pumpkin, a crescent moon, a rose-covered harlequin pattern, a mysterious carousel horse, celestial stripes, a crystal ball moon, a black cat and—one of my favorites—a wonderfully serious little owl.

And, of course, there are roses everywhere. 🌹

From Handmade to Printable

Midnight Midway Paper Rocket Bouquet Old Fashioned Fireworks and Carnival NightsI originally created the rockets as a handmade nosegay, gathering all eight onto wooden stems and finishing the bouquet with burgundy ribbon, black lace and cream trim.

But these were just too much fun to keep to myself.

So I turned The Enchanted Rose Garden into a printable project you can make at home.

The digital collection includes all eight rocket body designs, along with four ornate rose-and-celestial cone designs and four coordinating striped cone designs. I also added a printable Enchanted Rose Garden tag so you can give your finished bouquet that final Midnight Midway touch.

And they’re surprisingly easy to make.

Print. Cut. Roll. Glue. Add the cone top. Add a wooden stick.

That’s it.

Each finished rocket is approximately 6 inches tall and 1½ inches in diameter. Add a 5-inch wooden stem and gather the rockets together to create an approximately 11-inch-tall nosegay.

Make It Your Own

One of my favorite things about a printable project is seeing what happens after someone else gets hold of it.

You can make all eight rockets and create the full Enchanted Rose Garden nosegay, or make just a few and tuck them into Halloween displays, baskets, centerpieces or tiered trays.

Add black lace. Burgundy velvet ribbon. Old buttons. Tassels. Fringe. A little glitter if you’re feeling dangerous. 😂

The artwork gives you the starting point, but the finished piece doesn’t have to look exactly like mine.

In fact, I hope it doesn’t.

Step Right Up to the Midnight Midway: A Vintage Halloween Banner

The gates are open, the lanterns are glowing, and the black cats have taken their places. Welcome to the Midnight Midway.

Midnight Midway DIY BannerHalloween has always been at its best when it feels just a bit mysterious. Not frightening, exactly. More like an old carnival that appears at dusk — glowing lanterns, painted signs, striped tents, strange little prizes, and the feeling that you probably should keep walking…but of course you don’t.

That was the idea behind my Midnight Midway Collection, and the newest addition is the Midnight Midway Halloween Banner.

I wanted this banner to look as though the pieces had been gathered from an old Halloween carnival — part vintage circus poster, part antique Halloween postcard, with just enough celestial magic mixed in.

Black cats grin beneath starbursts. Jack-o’-lanterns wear witch hats and party hats. An owl keeps watch beside the moon. Stars, diamonds and bold carnival stripes fill the spaces between them.

The colors are deliberately old-fashioned: warm pumpkin orange, deep midnight blue and black, faded cream and touches of red. I added worn textures and imperfect printing details so the pieces have the character of something that might have been tucked away in an old box of Halloween decorations for decades.

Eleven Pennants, One Midnight Midway

The complete banner includes 11 different pennants, mixing larger illustrated pieces with long triangular flags.

Some of my favorites are the wonderfully mischievous black cat, the moon-faced celestial design, the owl, and the stack of three jack-o’-lanterns. I also created coordinating starbursts, harlequin diamonds and striped pennants so the banner feels collected rather than overly matched.

Each pennant measures approximately 5 inches wide by 7 inches high, and the complete garland stretches approximately 8 feet when strung.

That makes it large enough to really become part of your Halloween decorating — across a mantel, doorway, hutch, shelf, party table or along a wall.

And because I know some of us fall into two very different camps when it comes to crafting, I made the Midnight Midway Banner two ways.

Ready to Hang — or Make It Yourself

The finished Midnight Midway Banner arrives cut, assembled and ready to hang, with approximately 8 feet of twine included.

This is the version for anyone who sees a pair of scissors and thinks, No thank you. I have decorating to do.

But I also created a printable Midnight Midway Banner for those of us who actually enjoy sitting at the table with cardstock, scissors, a hole punch and a cup of coffee while making Halloween decorations.

The digital version includes the printable banner pages and instructions. Print them on your favorite cardstock, cut out the pennants, punch the holes and string them in whatever order you like.

You can even print additional copies and make the Midway as long as you want.

And the Midway Isn’t Closing Yet…

This banner has started something.

As I worked on the cats, moons, pumpkins, stars and carnival patterns, I kept imagining what else might belong inside this strange little Halloween midway.

So more pieces are beginning to appear.

Some are decorative. Some are printable. Some may have arms and legs that move.

And one particularly suspicious black cat seems to have appointed himself master of ceremonies.

The gates to the Midnight Midway are officially open.

Step right up! I’ve been busy in the Handmade Studio turning a little vintage carnival mischief into one of my favorite Halloween projects yet — Midnight Midway Rocket Invitations.

Part invitation, part paper craft, and definitely not something that gets lost in a pile of ordinary envelopes, these dimensional rockets were inspired by old fireworks, carnival posters, black cats and spooky October nights.

A Little Something From the Night Sky: Custom Halloween Rocket Bouquets

There’s something especially fun about giving a Halloween gift that isn’t candy, isn’t a candle, and isn’t something you’ll find on every store shelf.

This year I’ve added a Choose Your Own 4 Rocket Bouquet to my Astral Menagerie Collection—a small, whimsical bundle of celestial Halloween magic made for gifting, decorating, or sending to someone who appreciates the wonderfully unusual.

Each bouquet begins with four handcrafted paper rockets chosen by you from the collection. Black cats, mysterious moons, vintage suns, scattered stars and old-fashioned celestial faces make every combination a little different.

There are certain evenings that seem to exist outside of time.

The air grows cool. The sky fades from gold to velvet. Somewhere in the distance, leaves rustle across an old wooden porch, and for just a moment the world feels wonderfully mysterious again.

That feeling is what inspired The Astral Menagerie Collection.

This collection isn’t meant to look frightening. It isn’t meant to be loud or spooky.

It’s meant to feel like discovering an old box of forgotten Halloween treasures tucked away in the attic of a Victorian house—filled with celestial maps, carnival posters, black cats, moonlit stories, and paper fireworks that somehow escaped another century.

A Different Kind of Halloween

I’ve always loved the quieter side of Halloween.

Not the jump scares. Not the monsters.

The magic. The old illustrations. The moon watching from above. The friendly black cat crossing a garden path. The paper decorations hanging from porches. The mysterious carnival that only appears after sunset.

The Astral Menagerie lives somewhere between all of those worlds.

Victorian celestial engravings. Vintage fireworks stands. Old astronomy books. Carnival banners. Harvest moons. Compass stars. Constellations. Curious cats who seem to know secrets they’ll never tell.

The word astral speaks of the heavens. A menagerie is a curious collection of extraordinary creatures. Together they became the perfect name for this little universe.

A place where moons smile. Stars whisper. Cats roam freely through constellations. And Halloween is celebrated not with fear—but with wonder.

Made Slowly

Every bouquet is assembled by hand in my Pennsylvania studio.

The papers are printed, cut, folded, and carefully built into decorative rockets inspired by antique fireworks from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Finished with ribbons, lace, and a collectible celestial tag, each bouquet is designed to feel like something discovered rather than manufactured.

Something that could have been sitting quietly on an old library shelf for generations.

A Little Moonlight Magic Is On the Way

As summer lingers, the first whispers of autumn and moonlight magic begin to appear.

The fireworks have faded, the flags have been folded, and another Fourth of July has slipped gently into memory.

But if you’re anything like me, you know that once summer reaches its height, something magical begins to stir.

The days are still warm, but the evenings arrive just a little earlier. The golden light lingers a bit longer at dusk, crickets begin their nightly songs, and somewhere in the distance, autumn quietly starts making its plans.

I’ve always loved this in-between season—the gentle pause between patriotic summer celebrations and the enchantment of fall. It’s the time when my mind begins wandering toward pumpkins, candlelight, old carnival posters, and the kind of Halloween that feels more whimsical than spooky.

This year, I’ve been working on something special in the studio: The Moonlight Masquerade Collection.

Inspired by vintage masquerades, antique Halloween postcards, celestial evenings, and old-fashioned carnival magic, these handcrafted paper rocket bouquets are designed to capture that dreamy moment when summer slowly gives way to autumn. Each bouquet is created from cream parchment cardstock and tied with seasonal ribbon, making them perfect for centerpieces, baskets, wreaths, vases, and cozy little corners that need a touch of Halloween charm.

This is only the beginning.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing more pieces from the collection as the nights grow a little longer and the air hints at the changing season.

DIY Printable Patriotic Pinwheels for Vintage Style Summer Decorating

Old-fashioned summer decorating has a charm all its own — little flags tucked into flower pots, red, white, and blue paper crafts on the table, and handmade details that make a celebration feel personal. My newest printable craft was inspired by that feeling: DIY Printable Patriotic Pinwheels with a vintage Americana look.

This set includes 6 printable pinwheel designs that you can print at home, cut, fold, and display. The designs feature classic patriotic colors, aged paper textures, stars, stripes, eagles, fireworks, and vintage-style red and navy patterns. They have a timeless handmade look that works beautifully for 4th of July decor, summer parties, mantels, tiered trays, centerpieces, and Americana displays.

One of my favorite things about this set is that the pinwheels can be printed double-sided. That means you can mix and match the fronts and backs to create lots of different variations from the same 6 designs. Each finished pinwheel has its own personality depending on which patterns you pair together.

The assembly is simple and fun. Just print the design pages on cardstock, cut out the square, cut along the marked lines, punch the holes, gently fold the corners toward the center, and secure everything with a brass fastener. Then you can add a wooden skewer, dowel, or floral wire to the back and place them in a vase, pitcher, wreath, centerpiece, or summer display.

I love them gathered together in a rustic pitcher or laid out on a whitewashed board. They have that classic “print, cut, fold, decorate” feeling that makes paper crafting so satisfying.

The Williamsburg Collection: Vintage Historic Paper Rockets for Summer Celebrations

I have always loved patriotic decorations that feel a little more timeless than trendy — the kind of pieces that look just as pretty tucked into a shelf, displayed on a mantel, or added to a summer table asthey do for the 4th of July.

My newest set, The Williamsburg Collection, was inspired by that classic historic look: antique engravings, colonial blue and red, aged paper, vintage toile patterns, and early American imagery. Instead of bright modern fireworks colors, I wanted these petite paper rockets to feel like something you might find in an old scrapbook, historic home, or vintage Independence Day display.

This collection includes 8 petite paper rockets, each printed on an off-white 65 lb cardstock for a softer, aged-paper feel. The designs include vintage-inspired artwork featuring Betsy Ross, the Fifth Virginia Convention, Founding Fathers, patriotic eagles, Liberty imagery, and classic toile-style patterns with flags, stars, fireworks, and George Washington crossing the Delaware.

What I love most about this set is that it feels festive without being overly bright or novelty. The red, white, and blue palette is still patriotic, but the historic illustrations give the rockets a more refined, interior-design feel. They would be beautiful in a vase, tucked into a centerpiece, displayed on a mantel, added to a tiered tray, or used as part of a vintage-inspired summer table.

The rockets are smaller than my original paper rocket designs, making them perfect for a petite bouquet. They are finished with a coordinating tag, ribbon, and trim for a handmade presentation that feels special and collectible.

These are decorative paper rockets only — not fireworks — but they are meant to capture the charm of old-fashioned summer nights, historic celebrations, and classic Americana style.

New in the Studio: Vintage-Inspired Articulated Paper Dolls

There’s something magical about old-fashioned paper toys.

Inspired by antique paper dolls, nostalgic holiday decorations, and vintage Americana, I recently created two new articulated paper doll designs for my Handmade Studio: a patriotic drumming cat and a cheerful golden retriever dressed for a Fourth of July celebration.

Each doll is designed to be printed at home, carefully cut out, and assembled with brass fasteners to create movable arms and legs. The finished dolls can be posed and displayed on shelves, tiered trays, mantels, or incorporated into seasonal decorating. They also make charming gifts for animal lovers, collectors of vintage-inspired artwork, and anyone who appreciates a little handmade whimsy.

The patriotic cat features a vintage drum, Uncle Sam hat, and playful circus-inspired charm, while the golden retriever proudly waves an American flag and holds a festive firecracker. Both designs include bonus patriotic ephemera and detailed instruction sheets for easy assembly.

Creating these pieces combined several of my favorite things: illustration, vintage design, Americana, and a touch of nostalgia. They feel like treasures that might have been discovered tucked away in an old attic trunk or general store display.

Patriotic Paper Rockets – A Vintage Inspired Summer Craft

Old-fashioned summer celebrations hold such charm. Vintage fireworks stands, faded patriotic postcards, paper decorations, carnival prizes, sparklers at dusk — all of it inspired this newest project: a collection of handcrafted patriotic paper rockets designed to bring a little nostalgic Americana charm into summer decorating.

Take a peek at the creation of this new collection.

What started as a printable centerpiece idea quickly turned into something much bigger. I began creating individual rocket designs inspired by antique ephemera, vintage patriotic illustrations, old Black Cat fireworks advertisements, sweet kittens and puppies, sailor children, worn stripes, faded stars, and romantic Americana textures. Before long, I had an entire bouquet of paper rockets sitting on my table tied together with ribbon like an old-fashioned summer market bundle.

Each rocket is printed, cut, rolled, and assembled by hand. The cone tops were designed to coordinate with the artwork so every piece feels cohesive while still having its own personality. Some feature vintage-inspired florals and flags, others feature nostalgic patriotic imagery with kittens, puppies, and children that feel straight out of a faded storybook.

One of my favorite details is the handmade tag tied to the bouquet:
“Inspired by Old Fireworks Stands & Summer Nights.”

That phrase perfectly captures the feeling I wanted these to have.

The finished rockets can be displayed in crocks, bottles, baskets, mason jars, or grouped together as centerpieces for summer decorating, Fourth of July celebrations, patriotic mantels, or cottage-style Americana displays. I also created printable versions so they can be assembled at home as an easy DIY project.

I love projects that blur the line between paper craft, illustration, home decor, and nostalgia — and these rockets became exactly that. They feel playful and whimsical, but also decorative and collectible at the same time.
